Civil War Years
Harriet Tubman served for the Civil War. She was a nurse, spy and scout. She organized groups of scouts and spies.Colonal James Montgomery ordered Harriet to lead troops in the Combahee River Expidition. That expidition freed more than 750 slaves. When she got her first paychack, she thought that she was in employment of the U.S. Army. She used the money on the paycheck to build a place for African American women that did laundry for soldiers that earned the women a living. After 3 years, Harriet only got paid a total of (a little over) $200.00. After her regular work dudies, she earned a little extra money (which supported her) selling baked goods and homemade rootbeer. When she was done serving for the Millitary, the Millitary Men never paid back her millitary pay check.
